Tying Notes
-Keep the brass eyes tied as close as you can to the hook eye. This will keep the back end of the fly pointing up during pauses in the retrieve. It produces a nice jigging action.
-Make sure the Zonker strip is tied upside down so the material faces the fish during your retrieve.
-Select a larger soft hackle feather to add body and action to the fly
-Use brown fabric paint to coat the head around the brass eyes for durability. One to two coats is plenty and will create a very durable head. Use orange and black fabric paint to create eyes after the brown fabric paint is dried. The orange paint will cover up and brown paint that found its way over the brass eyes.
Fishing Tips
To get the most out of this pattern you need to be getting down as quickly as possible and staying there. For shallow applications, I would recommend a five to ten foot fast sinking, sink tip fly line and a short four to five foot leader with no less than twelve pound fluorocarbon. The orientation of the fly, dipping action of the sink tip, and the floating line behind the sink tip all work together to give you a great jigging presentation. In shallow water you could also use a floating line with a nine foot leader to achieve the same action. Keep the leader stiff to avoid break offs and lost fish. In deeper water use a full sink fly line based upon the depth you will be fishing. Keep the leader short at four to five feet and make sure to count your fly down according to your line. You will be throwing this fly in and around structure that eats line. Always use fluorocarbon! Good luck with this pattern. I know that it will catch you fish.
